Amazon faces backlash over religious images on doormats

TNN | Jun 6, 2016, 01.18 AM IST

Bengaluru: E-commerce major Amazon came under fire for selling doormats and other products with images of Hindu gods, verses from the Quran, and images of Jesus Christ on its American portal, creating furore on social media. As people noticed these products with religious images being sold on Amazon.com, their outrage soon went viral on microblogging site Twitter on Sunday, when #BoycottAmazon started trending.

Following the protests on Twitter, Amazon has been in the process of clearing out these products from its site. At the time of filing this report, a few of these items were still available on the online retailer's US site. The Indian unit's website of Amazon is Amazon.in.

Some websites reporting on the incident said Amazon was also selling other items like mobile phone covers, mouse pads with these images.

When contacted, an Amazon India spokesperson said in an email, "We have escalated this to concerned team, for them to take appropriate action. The items you reference are no longer available for sale." #BoycottAmazon has been trending since early Sunday morning with many users saying they have uninstalled the app.

Since when is this news? Name an item you can't get with an image of Jesus on it. I bet your church has a gift shop.

You really shouldn't get your core ideas from the internet.

As to your question, I do know that the RCC has spent over $4 billion dollars since 1950 on sex abuse lawsuits, the vast majority of those funds going to victims. That represents about 3% of its income in those 65 years. How much of those funds came from insurance, I don't know. Either way, I'm more interested in how the remainining 97% was spent.

Which leads me to a question for you: Why are 97% of the posts by antitheists in here about pedophilia?

97%? Here's why:
Religious apologists like yourself portray religion as a benevolent force. They completely ignore the genocide and oppression for which it is responsible by deflecting it by pointing to food pantries. As if a bowl of soup is more than sufficient penance for murder and rape.

And it's more than that. It's not just the pedophilia, it's the cover-up and denial of help for its victims. The utter hypocrisy of an organization claiming to represent God on Earth while committing such crimes against humanity is mind boggling.

But I'm glad you concede the overwhelming majority of your posts are anti-Catholic. Unfortunately, most of them are inaccurate, broadbrushed and flat out wrong. I know you didn't pull them out of your bout but from a ladle dipped in a vat of bigotry.

And before you pull this "religious apologists like yourself" crap again, doubtless using the same broad brush, calling you on your bullshit is hardly religious apologetics. You either need to read my posts more closely - or your own.

And for the record, I sport no religious images anywhere on my body.

I would object to Jesus stamps. I am already on record against "in God we trust" on our currency.
