At a Lutheran church in Sweden yesterday, Pope Francis kicked off a year of celebrations leading up to next year's 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation, calling for forgiveness and healing on both sides because that's what Jesus would do. Or at least what he thinks Jesus would do, which is exactly what starts everyone arguing again.
The historic event marked the most profound attempt yet to heal the half-millennium rift that has divided the world's largest group of role-play gamers. Catholics doctrinally ascribe theological authority to a single elected office known as "The Papacy," or by its Latin title, which translates roughly as "Dungeon Master." Protestants rebelled in 1517 when Martin Luther--a 12th level cleric with high charisma and a psionic Axe of Grinding--decided that players should be able to make up their own rules.
Martin Luther abruptly quit when the Dungeon Master at the time, who went by the street name Leo X, refused Luther's request to modify 95 rules, such as whether players can buy extra hit points.
Protestants, as they were called, went on to start their own game, which players won by accumulating the most money, requiring them to prove their worth by working always until they died, when they all lost. More recent variations changed the rules so that everyone wins when they die and until then can pretty much fuck the rules and vote for whoever they want.

That's some good stuff right there.

The term "pontiff" is derived from the Latin: pontifex, which literally means "bridge builder" (pons + facere) and which designated a member of the principal college of priests in ancient Rome.[120][121]

The word pope is derived ultimately from the Greek πάππας[1] (páppas[2]) originally an affectionate term meaning "father", later referring to a bishop or patriarch.[3] The earliest record of the use of this title is in regard to the Patriarch of Alexandria, Pope Heraclas of Alexandria (232248)[4][5] in a letter written by his successor, Pope Dionysius of Alexandria, to Philemon, a Roman presbyter:
τοῦτον ἐγὼ τὸν κανόνα καὶ τὸν τύπον παρὰ τοῦ μακαρίου πάπα ἡμῶν Ἡρακλᾶ παρέλαβον.[6]
Which translates into:
I received this rule and ordinance from our blessed father/pope, Heraclas.[7][8]

(2,262 posts)"Pope" also by the way, is probably related to pater, or poppa; or father. And hence to the word "patronize."
To "dogmatize" probably comes from Latin word for doctrine: "dogma."
The word "papism" is related to pope too.

(2,262 posts)That many are.
In the end, we discover that some of our highest holy men, were "false pophets" and false religious leaders. Working for the "beast"... or "Dragon," in some readings of Revelation, etc..
The word "dragon" comes from the Greek word for a serpent. Significantly, shockingly, in the Bible, Jesus likens himself and his followers to serpents. This odd and disturbing, because normally snakes in the Bible are associated with Satan, or the devil.
Were Jesus and other religious leaders, really false leaders, or the devil himself? A disturbing suggestion. But one perhaps hinted at, amazingly, in the Bible itself

(12,157 posts)The only reference I know of Jesus comparing his disciples to serpents is Matthew 10:16. "Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves." KJV. He is warning them of the dangers he is sending them into and that they need to balance wisdom without doing harm. like the Hippocratic oath that doctors take to use the wisdom of their art to heal and not to harm.
There are certainly false prophets throughout the history of religions, that's a giving. It is strange that you would suggest that the Bible has Jesus and his disciples being such and using references to the book of Revelations to bolster these arguments. I think this is a case of having your cake and eating it as well. If as you say Jesus and his followers are false prophets you have to toss out the whole of the Christian testament of the Bible since it is the writings of false prophets.

(2,262 posts)To be wise as snakes is still to be snakelike or twisting.
In the other reference, Jesus says he will be lifted up, the way Moses lifted up a snake.
Hippocrates may be in the background. But biblical resonances should be first here. Which link snakes to Satan. Even Moses' snake links to pharonic headdresses. And Pharaohs were bad.
In my reading the Bible has many levels. Those who need to learn obedience will see that level. Those who are ready to move on should see the bible modestly admitting sins in its own highest heroes.

(2,262 posts)Jesus is coy about whether he is the Christ. Perhaps Jesus himself was a false Christ?
Meanwhile Paul calls Cephas or Peter an insincere hypocrite. As Paul calls himself a "fool," and the "worst of sinners."
Jesus calls Peter "Satan" in Mat. 16.23.
In a book on False Priests, Woodbrige Goodman finds hundreds of warnings in the Bible about bad - or as it often says, "false" - things in every aspect of religion, including Christianity. From A to Z; from angels and anointing and apostles, through our worship and zeal.
Finally we suggest, for the reader who can "see," the Bible criticises and effectively cancels itself.
