Memorial for noted atheist who died in plane to be held at airport

By Chicago Tribune staff
December 19, 2016

A commemoration for well-known atheist Rob Sherman, who died when his small plane crashed into a field in McHenry County, will be held this week at Schaumburg Regional Airport.

Sherman, who was noted for fighting for church and state separation, will be honored at a memorial gathering at the airport, 905 W. Irving Park Road, from 3 to 9 p.m. Thursday, according to a published obituary.

The obituary notes both his political activism — he was known for initiating legal battles over such issues at religious symbols on town logos and prayer at public events — and his love of aviation.

"When he liked something, he was passionate about it. He was very passionate about separation of church and state issues," the obituary states.
