Catholic church's child protection body would have broad secrecy powers, inquiry told

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/feb/20/catholic-churchs-child-protection-body-would-have-broad-secrecy-powers-inquiry-told

A new Catholic body designed to scrutinise the church’s approach to child abuse would have “extraordinary power” to keep its reports secret, the royal commission has heard.

The church announced late last year it would create Catholic Professional Standards (CPS) to lead its efforts on child protection.

CPS will set standards for the protection of children and vulnerable adults, and engage external auditors to assess compliance. Its “teeth” will rely on it publishing those audits widely, an approach taken in Ireland to drive transparency and accountability in a church traditionally hostile to external scrutiny.

But the royal commission into institutional responses to child sexual abuse heard on Monday that CPS would have broad powers to keep the audits from being published.

Don't worry, given the church's history of openness and transparency on this issue I'm sure they can be trusted now.

And Hitchens. So shut up, atheists. I think that's how it goes. Hateful, bigoted believers who can't stand seeing their church criticized must lash out and somehow equate child rape with sending a tweet.

We've seen that tactic so many times. It was basically the Trump campaign too, deflecting all the insanity and ridiculousness of their candidate with "But Hillary..!"

If a school district did what the RCC has done, this place would blow up with hatred.

but the church gets a pass. Even trying to talk about it simply gets you labeled an anti-Catholic bigot and shouted down by pathetic enablers.

that religious leaders rape and sexually abuse at the same rate as public school teachers*

*without 1) proof and 2)understanding that ritualistic religious sexual abuse is vastly underreported, even amongst the under-reportedness of sexual abuse in general so 3) the sexual abuse THAT WE KNOW OF by religious leaders is being compared to public school teacher abuse and 4)public school teachers generally aren't coddled, protected, and hidden by the leaders of one of the most powerful political and religious institutions in the world, allowed unfettered access to more children even though their disgusting proclivities are known.
