Knowing We Dont Have Liberty and Justice For All, These Seventh Graders Wrote a New Pledge

Last month, a classroom full of seventh graders at El Camino Real Academy in New Mexico staged a mass protest against the Pledge of Allegiance. The 20 students remained seated when it came time for the morning ritual — and most of them have kept seated ever since.

The reason? They felt the Pledge no longer “spoke to them,” and they wanted to join in on a social media campaign to remain silent instead of saying it.

“It’s a good pledge,” one of the students told her. “But we’re not living it in America.”

That makes sense. We don’t really have “liberty and justice for all” in this country — certainly not with the Republicans currently in charge threatening to build a wall to keep out Mexicans and instituting a(nother) travel ban to prevent other shades of brown people from coming into the country.

1. I sub at a school that does the school wide pledge of allegiance every morning

And I don't feel it is relevant anymore. I say it because I am the teacher but inside I feel so much anger that our country is messed up now. I was in tears saying it the day after the election,

2. Ask one of the kids to read the First Amendment aloud before the Pledge.

That's still worth reciting.

3. It is sad that these kids are smarter than our president

I'm so proud of them. I hope they grow up and run for office! We need people like this to fight for our ideals. I think impeaching the entire Trumpy administration will be what we need. They are all crooks and liars and they need to go. The down side is that will put assh*le Ryan in charge. The upside is that we get rid of the a very disgusting idiot-liar-crook-in-chief. I really can't deside which one is worse at this point.

I pledge for all those immigrants that came here for a dream and for all of those kids that want to have a better future and career.

I want all the people treated [equally] and with respect.

All immigrants are America.

And come for a dream of a better life.
