New case of neonatal herpes caused by Jewish circumcision

http://nypost.com/2017/03/08/new-case-of-neonatal-herpes-caused-by-jewish-circumcision/

The city Health Department has reported a new case of neonatal herpes caused by a controversial ritual Jewish circumcision.

The ancient practice — known as metzitzah b’peh — requires a mohel, the person performing the circumcision, to suck blood from the incision on an infant’s penis.

It has long been linked to neonatal herpes and has consistently raised red flags in the medical community.

The practice continues without restriction in the city after Mayor de Blasio made a pledge to the Hasidic community during his 2013 campaign to lift a requirement of written parental consent.

I remember last time this was posted...oh the pretzel-twisting logic of why it should be considered ok to have grown men suck the blood from the penises of freshly circumized infants and not, you know, perversion. It was a true sight to behold.

I guess "deeply held religious beliefs" allow adult men to put their mouths on the freshly-circumised penises of infant boys to stop the flow of blood (because there's no other way, apparently, that god would approve of. Had no idea God frowned on bandaids or holding pressure ). And that the spread of neonatal herpes was just how it was, because of these deeply held beliefs. That infants were permanently damaged, and in some cases died was just the price to pay for deeply held beliefs.

And for the alert that I Know will come for daring to criticize these deeply held religious beliefs:

Metzitzah B'Peh (oral suction)[edit]
The ancient method of performing metzitzah—metzitzah b'peh, or oral suction[37][38]—has become controversial. The process has the mohel place his mouth directly on the circumcision wound to draw blood away from the cut. The majority of Jewish circumcision ceremonies do not use metzitzah b'peh,[39] but some Haredi Jews use it.[40][41][42] It has been documented that the practice poses a serious risk of spreading herpes to the infant.[43][44][45][46] Proponents maintain that there is no conclusive evidence that links herpes to Metzitza,[47] and that attempts to limit this practice infringe on religious freedom.[48][49][50]

What is oral suction circumcision, or metzitzah b'peh, and where did it come from?
Though to a small number of observant communities, the practice is routine and normal, to cosmopolitan sophisticates it may seem pretty gruesome. After the mohel cuts off the foreskin, he uses his mouth – oral suction, rather than say a sponge - to effectively clear the wound on the baby's penis of blood, lest it clot and decay.
As for where it arose, metzitzah b'peh is a time-honored tradition codified in the most important Jewish scripts, much like circumcision itself.

it would be universally condemned and stopped.

Religion somehow makes it not only OK, but grants it special protection.

how it's pretty sick but, it's religious so we should just let it happen because religion makes it okay for grown adult men to place their mouths on the freshly circumized penises of infant boys, and applying oral suction to stop the flow of blood

FYI -- I'm a nurse. To hasten the clotting of blood, you put pressure, not suction.

It makes me want to throw up every time I read about a child being harmed by their parents' religious practices. I include the anti vaccination nutcases, too. That bunch has become so much like a cult that it probably should be considered as one.

On the other hand, the more people who know this shit goes on, the more pressure can be put on lawmakers to make disgusting practices like this one the felonies they should be.
