Its that season again. An ominous swirl forms in the Atlantic, citizens batten down or evacuate, TV weather reporters put on rain slickers and, as predictably as National Weather Service bulletins, some End-Times pastors and other provocateurs on the right attribute the storm to a wrathful Gods vengeance on liberals.
The storm surge has already washed up Jim Bakker, whose televangelism never quite recovered from his sex scandal and prison sentence for fraud. After Hurricane Harvey, he declared that this flood is from God, punishment for the former mayor of Houston attempting to subpoena ministers sermons.
Bakker said this while promoting his Tasty Pantry, a bucket of dehydrated food to help survive the apocalypse, and while sharing his set with Pastor Rick Joyner, who agreed storms dont happen by accident.
Likewise, Pastor Kevin Swanson has said the path of Hurricane Irma would be altered by God if the Supreme Court quickly made abortion and gay marriage illegal, before Irma does her damage, as Right Wing Watch noted.

(612 posts)and I firmly and unconditionally reject this interpretation of the relationship of natural disasters to sexual orientation - or any other "religious" or "moral" issue identified by rigid and judgmental Christian leaders, or their followers. God is Love. If you want to blame something for the weird changes in our weather patterns, blame global warming. Love and accept all of our sisters and brothers - in other words, everyone. That's authentic Christianity. May God forgive Bakker and everyone like him.

(612 posts)We are not merely the recipients of the world's beauty and mystery, but also its caretakers. God's creation, as I understand it, occurred through the process of the big bang. And our existence flows from the reality of evolution. As beings endowed with intellect, we need to learn about our world and our proper place within it. The physical laws of the universe must be respected, including the meteorological laws of planet Earth. I'm going to stop here. This discussion could be interminable. Suffice it to say that I see faith and rationality, religion and science, as complementary - not in opposition to each other. Don't know if this is an adequate response. I'm sure you'll let me know.

(836 posts)Apparently god is highly pissed at some of the most highly christian areas of the country. No mention of this from my christian "god is punishing so-and-so for sin!" peeps on FB.

(14,854 posts)why there were devastating hurricanes (and earthquakes, blizzards, droughts, fires, floods, etc.) that hit the US long before Roe. v. Wade, legal same-sex marriage, and the end of forced prayer in public schools. For example, what were the people in Galveston doing that was so bad in 1900?

(146,262 posts)More powerful, apparently, than Bakker's deity, it seems. An omnipotent deity could stop a hurricane in its tracks, one would think, but a few lesbians prevented that, it seems.
