House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Thursday that her Catholic faith "compels" her to support same-sex marriage, echoing President Barack Obama's similar statement earlier in the week, when he said his Protestant religion compels him to follow the Golden Rule to "treat others the way you'd want to be treated."
During her weekly Capitol press briefing, Pelosi congratulated President Obama on his May 9 official decision to support same sex marriage, calling it a "great day for America," and adding that she too feels the issue of same-sex marriage is an issue of anti-discrimination and equality for all.
"My religion has, compels me and I love it for it to be against discrimination of any kind in our country, and I consider this a form of discrimination. I think it's unconstitutional on top of that," Pelosi said.
The House Minority Leader added that she hopes Obama's announcement will help to unite Americans on the issue of same-sex marriage.

(34,341 posts)I get queasy when ANY politician drags their "faith" into public policy. There's no place for it and that's what is making this country swirl down the drain.

I'd rather people support same-sex marriage because it is the decent, proper, and HUMAN thing to do - rather than because they think their god wants it.

(10,437 posts)They probably ARE making the decision because it is the proper human thing to do. But, just like in plane crashes and mining disasters, so it is in "religiously motivated" social policy: the Big Guy gets all the credit for minor benefit, and absolutely no blame for the major harm. Good gig if you can get it.

(14,854 posts)As others have pointed out, people who oppose same-sex marriage for nonreligious reasons are all but nonexistent.

Note to Joe Biden and Nancy Pelosi: an improvement would be an American Catholic Church. Stage a war for independence. It's been done before.
