The journalist who reported the story, Juan Barrientos, said this is the biggest scandal of the [Catholic] Church in Colombia in the last 50 years.
Barrientos said he became curious about the Catholic Chruch in the city after watching the award-winning film Spotlight about a US newspaper that uncovered widespread sexual abuse in the United States.
A similar cover-up of mass sexual abuse seems to be going on in Medellin, according to the journalist.

(1,896 posts)It's true that generally, when we trot out the crime/cover-up thing, we're talking about a relatively piddling thing somebody goes to extreme lengths covering up. In this case, it's a pretty horrible thing, but the cover-up is arguably even worse.
If, say, the USPS, or Exxon hired a bunch of pedophiles--and they're both big enough they certainly have--but acted in a moral and responsible manner when those pedophiles were caught, then no real blame attaches to the employer. They gave somebody a chance, that person turned out to be a monster, they let justice run its course. The crime is horrible, but it doesn't touch the employer because the employer did the right thing. Even if the employer has some other problems.
But a church covering up child molesters is actively facilitating pedophilia. As horrible as one child molester is, the RCC pedophile shuffle institutionalized the crime, put it on an assembly line, and spread it far and wide creating a culture where it was tolerated. They clearly worked to multiply the number of children impacted by this abuse, and it appears the multiplier is significantly greater than 1 compared to the number of children who would have been abused if the church had acted morally. Factor in the way it isolated the abused children, called them liars, and generally added mental abuse to the sexual, and I think there's a fair argument the cover-up actually was the worse horror with these bastards.

(36,827 posts)If the Catholic church was really serious about making amends, they would investigate the travel habits of known abusers. Its not a stretch to assume lots of these shitstains were taking sabbaticals to the third world and were getting other priests victims loaned out to them.
