By Sarah Pulliam Bailey May 10 at 5:17 PM
A prominent Southern Baptist leader has issued an apology just days after thousands of Southern Baptist women signed an open letter to the trustees of his seminary that said they were shocked by his comments that objectify a teenage girl.
Comments made by Paige Patterson, president of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, about divorce, women and abuse that surfaced nearly two weeks ago have sent Southern Baptist leaders scrambling to respond over how women are treated in their churches.
Patterson, who told The Washington Post last week after the seminarys commencement that he has nothing to apologize for, issued an apology Thursday focused mostly on an example in a sermon describing a teenage girls physical appearance.
I wish to apologize to every woman who has been wounded by anything I have said that was inappropriate or that lacked clarity, Patterson wrote in a statement.

"I wish to apologize to every woman who has been wounded by anything I have said that was inappropriate or that lacked clarity."
Translated:
"Sorry if you were offended, not sorry I said any of it."

Its gone far beyond "wounding' the delicate sensibilities of abused women. This is the church policy that the president of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary is teaching to the future ministers , and they will enforce that doctrine on the women in their churches.
It's all your fault ladies, you aren't grovelling enough to puff up your man's fragile ego, so he has every right to beat you. Now go prostrate yourself and beg his forgiveness for your sins. Then pray and stop thinking about divorce.

(49,533 posts)They've committed themselves to the notion of an unchangeable rigid religious dogma - in fact, based their entire authority on the "fact" that THEY and THEY ALONE have their god's wishes EXACTLY RIGHT. If they admit they might be wrong about one thing, well, isn't it possible they could be wrong about something else? Like maybe gay people are just like straight people, and deserve the same rights? OH THE HORROR!

(8,038 posts)he's the president of their seminary, meaning he gets to marinade future generations of ministers in his patented misogynist stew.
And yes, this is another non-apology apology. The man obviously doesn't know the meaning of "repent."
