I am imagining a modern-day monkish sort,

meticulously typing names into a search box, and then poring through writings that are years old. A true scholar of sorts, trying to find evidence of some kind that might be useful in some purpose. My heart goes out to that studious soul, whose quest is never ending and stultifying.

Like a medieval monk, looking for a long-forgotten passage on parchment leaves, his search continues for that one writing that will prove his theological theory. Not realizing that nobody will care if he finds what he seeks, he labors on tirelessly, day after day. He does not notice the other monks sniggering at the futility of his quest.
