This will be used in the future to shut down any criticism of Liberty University. "Jimmy Carter didn't have any objection to what we do here. Why, he even spoke at our graduation ceremony in 2018! So what's your problem?"
Act_of_Reparation
(9,116 posts)I know why Liberty invited him. They want legitimacy and influence on par with the Ivies. Having a former presidentparty doesn't matterspeak at your graduation ceremony is a step in that direction. Now and forever, Liberty University will be able to counter criticisms of their legitimacy as an academic institution with "We've hosted presidents".
It is less clear why Carter would accept the invitation. You can dialogue with the Christian Right without accepting an invitation to an openly bigoted institution run by an openly bigoted Trump-humping asshat named Falwell.

(146,262 posts)Liberty University would be the first place to look. Personally, I think it's a shame that President Carter spoke there at all.

(42,641 posts)Dialogue is preferable to silence.
MineralMan
(146,262 posts)I have my own opinion regarding that.
Dialogue is only useful when it is based on equal representation of ideas. I think what you envision is called a "monologue," based on your calls for silence from the non-religious in this open discussion area.
guillaumeb
(42,641 posts)As is your mis-framing.

(146,262 posts)It's good to know that you're carefully noting posts that disagree with you. That way, you'll always have things to talk about here. I haven't the patience for such record-keeping.

But, what do you think, guillaumeb. Are you a fan of Liberty U?

(42,641 posts)that you prefer. The 11th Commandment restricts the type of dialogue that is allowable. Or rather, the Commandment restricts the type of dialogue that some would obviously prefer to see here.
But the group is open to all types of dialogue, positive and negative, and attempts to restrict it to only negative dialogue will be resisted.

At least youve managed to convince yourself of your righteousness.

It's easy to answer. Watch:
I wholeheartedly disagree with the positions of Liberty University. Fuck Falwell and the house he rode in on.
guillaumeb
(42,641 posts)I do not agree with Liberty University on probably most matters of theology either.

That institution and the founder et al are truly not my cup of tea. They spread dangerous fallacy.
