Religion
Related: About this forumSome right-wing Christian folks say:
"The Constitution of the United States is based on a Biblical foundation."They say it over and over again. It is a false statement.
From time to time, I have challenged such fundamentalist Christians to provide portions of the Constitution of the United States and link them to Biblical references that they believe are the origins of those portions.
Not once has anyone offered any such evidence. Not once. Why? Because there is no concurrence between the Bible and our Constitution. None.
The Constitution sets up the framework for our system of government, which is based on democratic principles and elected representation. No such principles exist in the Bible. No such form of government existed in Biblical times in places where the Bible held sway at the time it was created.
In fact, our Constitution expressly prohibits religion from having any official role in our government.
That statement about the basis of our Constitution is a lie, plain and simple. Those who make the statement know it is not true, and lie openly when they make the statement.
I urge everyone to present the same challenge anytime that statement is made in a place where it can be challenged. There will be no evidence presented, because none exists.

Kicking religion out of our government has proven to have been an enormous blessing.

(4,066 posts)Neither is true. The founders may have been deists but they were well-educated men. They had a better grasp of the truth and more critical thinking skills than any modern politician. They did not create a nation based on any single theology very much on purpose.

(5,569 posts)They run the same recording many times during the day, about how Biblical references appear all over Washington D.C., e.g., the ten commandments on the Supreme Court building, "In God We Trust" on US currency, other references on the Washington monument, and the list goes on and on. They fail to mention that
A: The US is not governed by the Bible, and
B: "God" does not appear anywhere in the Constitution.
Also omit references to the Jefferson Bible, The Danbury Baptist letter and the Treaty of Tripoli. Oh, and Jefferson's concept of the wall of separation.
