Canada may appear very secular compared with its southern neighbor, but a new poll suggests there is more openness to religion than appears on the surface, especially among younger Canadians.
The survey, called Faith in the Public Square, by the Angus Reid Institute found that 59 percent of Canadians say the free expression of religion in public life makes Canada a better country.....

A key caveat to the findings, Reid noted, is Quebec. The role of religion in public life is viewed much less favorably in that province, and responses from people there skew the national totals.

And the figures for Quebec are not surprising, as they lived under a very conservative Roman Catholic hierarchy for many decades.

17. Here in the US, there's a lot of religion in public life, as well.

Religious folks don't hide their faith, and nobody bothers them about it. There are half a dozen churches within three blocks of my house. A Hmong shaman lives two doors down the street, and hosts religious gatherings in his home. Nobody bothers him.

Our daily newspaper lists all of the religious events each week. There are several Islamic centers nearby, along with synagogues and other religious centers. We have several church-run colleges and universities, along with parochial schools and a couple of convents.

Its all free of controversy. There are no protests against any of that.

How is Canada better, Guy? Describe the differences. How are they more tolerant?

21. Quebec is a special case.

And being Québécois, my personal view is that laïcité, the strict separation of civil and religious affairs, is the reason for the difference.

As to the poll, my view is that it shows only a generalized tolerance for belief, and a tolerance at higher levels that is seen in Québéc.
