Filipino Catholics Won't Conduct Ritual Crucifixions Due to Coronavirus

Maybe there's a tiny silver lining.

https://friendlyatheist.patheos.com/2020/03/11/filipino-catholics-wont-conduct-ritual-crucifixions-due-to-coronavirus/

Because the event typically attracts thousands of tourists, there’s fear that the gathering could hasten the spread of coronavirus, therefore next month’s event has been called off. (Jesus lives!)

“We are not disrespecting religious beliefs and practices, but we actually are protecting them from the disease that may put them and their family at risk,” San Fernando Mayor Edwin Santiago said in a statement.

...

“I’m disappointed,” said resident Ruben Enaje, who was aiming to be crucified for the 34th straight year as part of a religious vow to atone for his sins, told AFP.

It’s one thing to cancel a concert or sporting event. I understand the frustration and the precaution. But canceling a ritualistic act of torture should be celebrated. It shouldn’t have taken a virus for these people to do the right thing.

In any other context, you'd be opposed to this. But because it's religion, it gets a pass from you.

One wouldn't be tied and nailed to a cross during a cruxifiction. Kind of defeats the purpose.

Those putting on a show by recruiting religious fanatics for extreme measures of mutilation are just assholes. No other way to look at it. Interesting that someone would defend this kind of religious assholery and then claim they weren't defending this kind of religious assholery right after they just did it. Tells you all you really need to know about that person.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with people encouraging religious fanatics to self-mutilate for the sake of religious tourism and profit so long as they are proving faith can motivate people to do batshit crazy things.

The reason you feel that way is because your hate of religion blinds you to the true purpose of all this.

causes people to do some really strange things. I'm glad to see that a smidgen of reason prevailed here.
