Biden’s DC church says president won’t be denied Communion over abortion stance

BY DON SWEENEY
JUNE 29, 2021 01:44 PM, UPDATED 8 HOURS 7 MINUTES AGO

A Washington, D.C., church attended by President Joe Biden says it will not deny him Communion despite a vote by U.S. Catholic bishops on the question.

“Holy Trinity Catholic Church will not deny the Eucharist to persons presenting themselves to receive it,” wrote the church in a statement.

In a 168-55 vote, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops decided June 18 to move forward with a proposal to deny Communion to politicians who support abortion rights, NPR reported.

Biden attended the Jesuit-run parish church in Georgetown as vice president and has resumed attending services since becoming president on Jan. 20, the National Catholic Reporter said.

In its statement, the church said its decision was in accord with the policies of Cardinal Wilton Gregory, its archbishop. Gregory also has said he will not deny Communion to Biden.

Everyone, including President Biden, has their personal relationship with their god/creator. These pompous hierarchy in the church .. whatever religious beliefs, need to clean their own house

No matter what the bishops decided. Same in Delaware. I must have said so fifty times on this board.

Except this really isn't about Joseph R. Biden the individual being denied communion, is it?

I mean, if you knew he wouldn't be denied the sacrament in his church, then it stands to reason the bishops certainly knew it, too. And yet they persist. Why do you think that is?

Virtue signaling is something authoritarians love doing as well. Rather than praying in the closet as Jesus suggested, the hypocrites just have to shout it to the world.

They aren't talking about denying Joe Biden the Eucharist because they think it will affect Biden's politics, much less because they think it is actually something they have any power over. They are talking about it because it energizes conservative Catholics.

That should be rather troubling to those who have long held that moderate/liberal discontent would eventually force the Church to reform. Cuz that doesn't seem to be the case.

This whole thing was a stunt. Internal politics, and also conflict with Francis that has gone on for years. Francis is not a liberal, but he has a global vision for the church, and America's bishops want to go back to the old days when they and Benedict were on the same page. Among other things.

I humbly accept your congratulations.
