Christian Conservatives Intend To Make Gay Marriage A Distraction

Monday, January 9, 2012

UPDATE: This just in. David Ammons of the Secretary of State's office reports that attorney Stephen Pidgeon has filed an initiative to "reaffirm" Washington's current definition of marriage as between one man and one woman. It would take 241,153 valid voter signatures by early July to get this moeasure on the fall ballot.

Governor Chris Gregoire's gay marriage bill is expected to drop this week with public hearings quickly to follow. Gregoire and fellow backers dismiss the suggestion that gay marriage will distract from the budget crisis at hand.

"I multi-task, they multi-task, that's the nature of the job here," said Gregoire at an Associated Press-sponsored legislative preview forum last week.

But Christian conservatives intend to make it a distraction. Gary Randall of the Faith and Freedom Network has been sending out email missives like this one ever since the Governor's announcement last week that gay marriage is on the agenda this session.
