Finding My Religion in a Bowl of Matzoh Ball Soup

It's Rosh Hashanah -- the Jewish New Year. For those of you non-Jews out there, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur make up the High Holidays. Basically, the one time of year that most Jews go to some sort of service and feel officially Jewish.

I grew up secular to a fault. We did not even go to services on Rosh Hashanah or Yom Kippur unless we were in Michigan with extended family and shamed into it. I did not attend Hebrew School, nor did I have a Bat Mitzvah. But, we did eat.

Somehow, even if none of us fasted, we managed to have a break-fast for the end of Yom Kippur and some sort of Rosh Hashanah dinner. We always had a Passover Seder, even if it was very light on story and heavy on the matzoh balls.

Through much soul-searching over the last few years as my husband and I have enrolled our daughters in Hebrew School and grappled with what we want them to get out of it, I have concluded that I am not Conservative nor Reform nor Recontructionist, but that I am at heart, a Culinary Jew.

there is NOTHING here about it in the land of the Tea Party Christianity. I would not have know it but for my son-in-law who teaches in NYC and is off.

I love Matzoh Ball soup, and have been to many Seders with Jewish friends when I lived in NY. Happy Rosh Hashanah to you!

I just made a big pot of chicken broth and it would be so perfect!

I also miss those big meals I used to be invited to in NYC.

Happy Rosh Hashanah to you!

And my favorite, Kasha. Über comfort food. (Especially when it's smothered in gravy )

Grew up in a Jewish neighborhood. I ate many Seder meals with next door neighbors, reformed Jews. Christmas dinner was at our house -- every year. Our families had a very close friendship for decades.

Food is good for you. Eat food.

There are few things I enjoy as much as sitting down for a meal with one or 21 other people.

Big feasts are my favorite, but I also love my frequent fondue dinners for four.

We have a guest right now and will enjoy a wonderful dinner out in the cockpit.

Wish you could join us, longship.

Nothing I like better than noshing with friends (see what I did there?).

Have a couple of mouthfuls for me.

I am having some of my home made apple wine. Really home made. I helped pick the apples (two years ago), helped crush them into cider (ended up with 600 gallons), and all the other stuff. It's suitably aged. And yes, it packs a bit of a wallop. Going to do the same this year.

I raise a glass to you.

I could go for some of that! It would be perfect this afternoon.

I just threw out the bones and stuff from my broth and the bald eagle came out. He came closer to the boat than we have seen him before. Good omen, imo.

It is still 2 hours from cocktail time here, but I will raise a glass to you!
