If youre unfamiliar with Penn Jillettes non-fiction writing career, some of his best works include Every Day is an Atheist Holiday! and God, No! With those titles in mind, it should come as no surprise that the libertarian illusionist, comedian, and actor took issue with a recent Fox News segment that decried American atheists objections to the use of One nation under God in the Pledge of Allegiance.
The Five segment in question happened the week before last. While discussing an atheist groups attempts to have the words under God removed from the pledge, co-host Dana Perino suggested that if those non-believers dont like it, they should just leave the United States.
On a recent edition of his weekly podcast, Jillette not only took umbrage at Perinos comments, but also with his good friend (and self-described agnostic atheist) Greg Gutfelds conspicuous silence during his Five co-hosts railing against non-believers.
Calling Gutfeld a giant pussy, Jillette mocked the Red Eye host for waiting for the check to cash while remaining silent during his Five co-hosts tirade. As Jillette lamented, Gutfelds skepticism towards religion is much more apparent on his late-night Fox show Red Eye while, on Foxs primetime talk show The Five, he is quieter when outnumbered by his co-hosts.

15:51 audio at link. The rant starts at 3:20. Jillette is clueless in his insults. Besides his misogynist similes, he's comfortable with homophobic language
That aside, I only knew Gutfield as a right wing Fox hack, not as an atheist.

Very "lowest common denominator" stuff, I'd say...

(33,982 posts)Say something bombastic and over the top, then without explicitly walking that bombastic statement back, say something heartfelt, true, and reasonable in a softer tone, then back to the bombastic shit.
If you're familiar with the technique, his tired use of it grates on the ears like someone forcing a reluctant mid-40's transmission to shift gears.

(40,416 posts)He does it deliberately. But that's not to say he doesn't have bad ideas. I find his overt libertarianism as over the top as his provocations.
I am not much amused by him.
But I also cannot say what is really in his brain. However, I find calling somebody a "pussy" to be way over the top, whether he's doing for provocation or not.

(135,425 posts)Frankly, he's an an asshole. He can't make his point without pissing off people who haven't done a thing TO him. The imagery is beyond stupid, and I have to say, it says some things that a psychiatrist could probably have a lot of fun interpreting, if they wanted to have a field day with that guy's "issues."
His program, "Bullshit", was not much more than weekly libertarian apologetics.
He's a true believer of the Ayn Rand cult, IMHO.
