Atheist to get her day at the Supreme Court

Susan Galloway (left) and Linda Stephens (Heather Ainsworth – Bloomberg)

By Bill Mears, CNN Supreme Court Producer

(CNN)– Linda Stephens has lived in her upstate New York community for more than three decades and has long been active in civic affairs.

But as an atheist, those views have put her at the center of a personal, political, and legal fight that has reached the U.S. Supreme Court.

The issue is public prayer at her local town board meetings, another contentious case over the intersection of faith and the civic arena.

The justices on Wednesday will hear arguments over whether Greece, New York, may continue sponsoring what it calls "inclusive" prayers at its open sessions, on government property.

It is always good to see the faces behind these cases.

But as to this story, it's about the limits of public prayer in governmental settings. Although some plaintiffs are atheists, it affects everybody.

I was just trying to be funny. I'm sorry. From now on, I'll leave my sense of humor at the door and pick it up on the way out.

This group can use all the good natured humor it can get.

Those that don't get it are best ignored.

I guess it would be who hasn't a single clue to what this forum is about.
Or thinks it's funny that atheism can be discussed in the context of religion.
Not funny, just ignorant.

and that has always included discussions of non-belief here.

While it has traditionally been a battle ground between certain members, it has also been a place where believers and non-believers have explored together and found common ground.

While there remain a few who are not interested in doing that, most of the people who post here find more in common than they do differences.

Welcome to the religion group!
