I can't quite connect 1937 with right before the Civil War. In 1937 the country was slowly coming together through the New Deal under FDR; right after Jessie Owens proved Hitler's master-race race wrong in the '36 Olympics. In the years leading up to the Civil War we saw US Senators physically assaulting each other right on the Senate floor as the country was falling apart! I'll have to read up on these two areas of history. Thank you for posting this.

was the one I meant to parallel with the WWII, the 1860 one was very close. These are long periods.
