Omaha students rally for gay teacher fired from Catholic school

Apr 30th 2015 8:38PM

A group of catholic school students out of Omaha, NE are showing support for one of their school's most loved teachers facing discrimination. Skutt Catholic School decided not to renew the contract of teacher and speech coach Matt Eledge after he came forward about his engagement to another man. Now much of the Omaha community is rallying behind the educator.

An online petition started being circulated in April to support Eledge and has already gained 95 thousand signatures. Students have been rallying on his behalf, even wearing shirts that read "I support Mr. Eledge" at an annual school fundraiser.

The student who created the t-shirts told KMTV it's about showing love for their teacher.

Despite the outpouring of support from the community, school officials continue to stand their ground on the decision. "If a staff member cannot commit to Catholic church teachings and doctrines, he or she cannot continue to be on staff at Skutt Catholic," said school President Jon McMahon.
