A New Jersey archbishop has released a memorandum to his priests stating, "Non-Catholics or any Catholic who publicly rejects Church teaching or discipline, either by public statements or by joining or supporting organizations which do so, are not to receive the sacraments."
The memorandum also says Newark diocesan and parish facilities should only be used by individuals and organizations not in opposition to Church teaching, and states, "Catholics, especially ministers and those who represent the Church, should not participate in or be present at public religious events or events intended to endorse or support those who reject or ignore Church teaching and Canon Law."
The Sept. 22 letter from the Most Rev. John J. Myers of the Archdiocese of New Jersey was made public in a story posted Tuesday on the Religion News Service website by reporter David Gibson.
The story includes a comment from a diocesan spokesman that called the letter "appropriate" in the wake of what the spokesman referred to as media generated attention on the Church in regard to issues like same-sex unions.
