Does the Holocaust Discount Jewish White Privilege?

The top three most popular articles right now on the online Jewish magazine Tablet all deal, in one way or another, with the question of Jews and privilege. The most interesting of the three, as well as the most viral, is Taffy Brodesser-Akner’s personal essay, “I Probably Won’t Share This Essay on Twitter: Some thoughts on being Jewish in contemporary polite society,” which opens with recent tweet of hers:

Kind of an interesting piece.

went in search of episodes to confirm her theory.

I think that there are many Jews of wide opinions about Israel and about anti-Semitism in Europe and in this country.

But in my brief misspent days as a criminal defense lawyer, I defended a Aryan Nation type.

He was really smart, polite, funny. Also a giant heroine and amphetamine distributor who wanted to kill blacks and Jews, but, hey, everyone has problems.

Anyway, he explained "he didn't really hate Jews," but that we "weren't white" and belonged in Asia, specifically Israel. And while he did think blacks belonged in Africa, he did hate them and considered them sub-human.

Difficult to represent the guy, as you would expect, although I did well for him. He would send me Holiday cards and several thoughtful letters to the effect that I was one of the few people in his life who did right by him. I understand he has an auto-parts store in some little town and gets on OK.

This "Jews are not white" bit was not unique to him. I've heard it a lot among that sub-set of people.

And, yes, we are treated differently, generally for the worse.

The most bias attacks on people in the USA, per capita, are on Jewish people. It's just a fact.
