University ousts student president, but not for Nazi sympathies

CAPE TOWN — The student government president at a South African university who publicly praised Hitler was removed from office, but over a separate matter, according to a university leader.

Mcebo Dlamini, who made headlines over the weekend after a graphic appeared on his Facebook page comparing the Israeli government to the Nazi regime, was ousted Monday from his post with the Students’ Representative Council at the University of the Witwatersrand.

Dlamini said Habib removed him from office because he had given in to pressure from “Zionists,” South Africa’s Eyewitness News reported.

The student leader told the Wits newspaper Vuvuzela, “What I love about Hitler is his charisma and his capabilities to organize people. We need more leaders of such caliber.”

In defending his Facebook remarks, Dlamini said he was looking at “Hitler’s good side. Hitler managed to uplift the spirit of the German people.”

Let's call the Wits problem by its right name: Jew hatred

It is necessary to call things by their right names. When former Wits University student representative council (SRC) president Mcebo Dlamini wrote "I love Hitler" on Facebook, he was responding to a comment that said "Hitler knew they were up to no good".

Dlamini’s comments shouldn’t be dressed up as anything else than what they are: Jew hatred.

Wits vice-chancellor Adam Habib subsequently removed Dlamini as SRC president after a lengthy disciplinary process. Habib said the firing was unrelated to the Hitler comments, though it is hard not to link the two.

Among Dlamini’s vocal supporters are those who style themselves as the Higher Education Transformation Network. "In capitulating to the interests of Jewish funders and alumni at the institution, Prof Habib has in our opinion, rendered himself a puppet who had to sacrifice the academic future of … Dlamini on the altar of political correctness," the group said in a statement. And so we move from #RhodesMustFall to #HabibMustFall because Habib, a Muslim, is now a "Jew puppet". Such is the poverty of thought among some individuals at one of our leading institutions of higher learning.
