Challenger tragedy, 30 years later

Judith Resnik’s courageous story was the inspiration for my sermon for the Sun Lakes Jewish Congregation’s Sisterhood Shabbat featuring Jewish women of science. She was the first Jewish woman astronaut, but shunned such publicity, saying, “I just want to be an astronaut, period!”

The Challenger disaster happened 30 years ago on Jan. 28, but for Mark Salita, Ph.D., it’s like it happened yesterday.

After the sermon, the Sun Lakes resident said to me, “She still haunts me,” revealing his professional and emotional connection to that disaster. Salita was closely involved with Space Shuttle missions and is a true “rocket scientist,” believing that his “intersection with Judy Resnik was preordained.”
