Activist Linda Sarsour appeared to criticize American Jews of a dual loyalty to Israel in a Facebook post calling for support for Congresswoman-elect Ilhan Omar, following a backlash over her announcement that she supports boycotting Israel.
Sarsour wrote in the post on Thursday that Omar is being attacked for saying that she supports BDS (Boycott Divestment Sanctions) and the right for people to engage in constitutionally protected freedoms. This is not only coming from the right-wing but some folks who masquerade as progressives but always choose their allegiance to Israel over their commitment to democracy and free speech.
.....
"You dont have to support BDS and have every right not to but we cannot stand by idly while a brave Black Muslim American woman is targeted for saying she will uphold the constitution of the United States of America as a member of the US Congress, Sarsour wrote.
In the comments section on the post in response to the criticism, Sarsour singled out the Anti-Defamation League. In an online petition in support of Omar, Sarsour wrote that she was alarmed by organizations like the ADL using their platforms to attack a trailblazing Black Muslim woman in order to undermine advocacy for Palestinian human rights.
The post raised the ire of the American Jewish Committee, which responded in a tweet: Accusing Jews of dual loyalty is one of the oldest and most pernicious antisemitic tropes. No surprise to see it coming from @LSarsour. How long will progressive leaders continue to look the other way in the face of this hate?

Perhaps Sarsour should check her loyalties at the door. Disagreeing with politicians is American as apple pie, and Sarsour has the gall to accuse American Jews of dual loyalty is pure anti-Jewish sentiment.
Strangely I don't believe I have ever heard Ms. Sarsour being critical of Islamist misogyny. I wonder why that is?

(53,951 posts)This is the anti-Semitism of the left. Sure, it isn't as "in your face" as the right, and tends not to be as deadly, but it is just as problematic and should be dealt with appropriately.

(47,470 posts)which, I suppose, makes her on a way to be a perfect politician.
She took advantage of a liberal, affluent Jewish community to assure them that, no, she does not support BDS. And after she got their money - would be interesting to see how much of her campaign donations came from Jews - and their votes, perhaps even actively campaigning for her and won, she changed her mind.
Sadly, this is happening in many urban areas. Jews feel the need to bend backward; after all, they are liberal so of course they support minority candidates. Any experience is immaterial.
And these candidates just spit in their faces. Now that she is a member of Congress, it will be hard to remove her. The district is as Democratic as they come; a Republicans has no chance. And anyone primary challenging her will be seen as a bigot.
That community, before many Somalis moved in, was, for many years served by a very liberal, active woman who happened to be a Jew, then got old and did not seem to represent them. But four years ago, a Somali election judge started spreading her ideas that that old "Jew" needed to be replaced. The judge was removed, I think.

Jewish community leaders previously expressed optimism after Omar criticized the BDS movement during an Aug. 6 Democratic candidates forum at Beth El Synagogue in St. Louis Park about a week before Omar defeated four other candidates in the partys primary. Omar said she supported a two-state solution in the Israel-Palestine conflict and that the BDS movement wasnt helpful in trying to achieve that goal. Pressed by moderator Mary Lahammer to specify exactly where you stand on that, Omar replied that the BDS movement was counteractive because it stopped both sides from coming together for a conversation about how thats going to be possible.

(53,951 posts)Palestinian-American civil rights activist Linda Sarsour has published an open letter in response to claims of anti-Semitism targeting her and the Womens March movement she leads.
Her message is not intended as an apology, nor is it meant to persuade or to convince, Sarsour writes in the letter published online to Maven Roundtable forum on social justice.
Sarsour addresses calls on her and Womens March co-leader Tamika Mallory to condemn leader of Nation of Islam and notorious anti-Semite, Minister Louis Farrakhan following the deadly attack on Pittsburghs Tree of Life synagogue in October that left 11 worshippers dead.
The Farrakhan controversy began 8 months ago when Jake Tapper and Jonathan Greenblatt of the ADL exposed/promoted a video of the Minister Farrakhan at an annual gathering for the Nation of Islam called Saviour's Day where Tamika D. Mallory was present along with 15,000 other people including many Black celebrities, business people, dignitaries and pastors, Sarsour describes.
The Womens March put out a statement responding to concerns from Jewish women about the movements inclusivity in light of Mallorys attendance at a rally where Farrakhan said the powerful Jews are my enemy.

(3,013 posts)Most used to be staunchly D but as they've felt under attack over the years (anti-Israel sentiment, anti-religious sentiment, etc) they have started going more R. So it's a mixed bag. Luckily, I am in Canada so only have to hear about it on FB or over the phone.
