Man charged with threatening to set fire to Westmount synagogue that was vandalized

A man who was arrested after swastikas were spray-painted on a synagogue in Westmount has been charged with threatening to burn the same building.

Adam Riga, 28, a resident of the St-Laurent borough, appeared before a judge at the Montreal courthouse Thursday morning. He was ordered to undergo a quick mental health evaluation, to determine if he understands court procedures, before his case returns to court on Friday.

Riga is charged with possessing incendiary and explosive materials with the intention of committing a criminal act. The materials are a container of gas and a lighter.

He is also charged with threatening to set fire to a synagogue. He was represented by a legal aid lawyer during his first court appearance.

According to provincial records, Riga does not appear to have a criminal record in Quebec.
