Mark Zuckerberg 'Inundated With Antisemitic Abuse' After Posting Photo of Family Dog Wearing Kippah

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg was subjected to a torrent of antisemitic abuse on the social media platform after posting a photo of his family dog Beast wearing a kippah and prayer shawl embroidered with Jewish stars.

Zuckerberg posted the snapshot of Beast — a Puli breed of Hungarian Sheepdog, according to the pet’s own Facebook page — among a series of eight photos employing other themes, including St. Patrick’s Day and a Disney film.

At writing, the picture of Beast in Jewish garb prompted over 3,000 comments, with many of those that drew the most engagement featuring explicitly antisemitic memes and other content. Other top responses portrayed the Palestinian flag and included calls to “Free Palestine.”

It also earned 4,400 “angry” reactions, compared to some 6,000 positive reactions.

The comments are disgusting. They range from bullshit "Free Palestine!" crap, which has nothing to do with the picture, to "KIKE!", "The clothing on the dog is appropriate because all Jews are dogs and pigs!" and much, much worse! I dislike Zuck for a number of reasons, but perhaps this event will motivate his ass to finally take a real stand against bigotry on Facebook, including anti-Semitism! Of course, I am sure there are some "anti-racists" who are loving this; nothing better then when a Jew is targeted.

Some people have to experience it first-hand in order to even start to understand. Of course, if he weren't as disliked as he is, it might even be considered "real" news, and if the attacks had been against a "real" minority, we might even see it on popular news shows for days. But, alas, just run-of-the-mill anti-Semitism and merits a big "meh" from the public in general.

You think he should be harassed on a daily basis?! Seriously?! Do you also think he should endure anti-Semitic harassment?

He could have all of this sort of thing off of Facebook in two weeks with a simple order to his employees. In effect, he himself subjects millions to just this sort of abuse. I expect I could work up some concern for his feelings, but it's not likely to come anywhere near the front of the queue much before September.

As I said to Mosby, perhaps it is this incident which will finally get through his thick skull and realize an overhaul is long overdue. I do, sometimes, find myself in that odd headspace where I hope for (a single incident) or lack concern when a minority is attacked for being a minority, when said person has been actively ignoring attacks or making it easier for others to justify their bigotry; however, I still don't think anyone should be up for daily abuse...well, there are always exceptions...

It shouldn't happen to anyone, but sometimes there may be benefit to a particular person being brought face to face with what they've set in motion, whether to harm others or for profit.

Some people seem to be lacking in the basic skills of sympathy and empathy. It has to happen to them, or at least someone they deeply care about, for it to register as a problem. It reminds me of the Oregon (?) state senator who was vehemently opposed to mental health provisions, especially in regards to suicide prevention. He even gave a hellfire and brimstone speech against the bill. Two weeks later (?), his only son killed himself. The senator became the biggest supporter and got the bill passed. It is soul-crushing, IMO, that it took the death of his son before he would understand the anguish that others had been feeling. Maybe Zuck will look at the hate heaped on him and his dog and finally say "enough is enough! No more H8!"

Time will tell.
