"Vast Methane-Based Ecosystem Uncovered" in North Atlantic

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2013/05/130522123017.htm

The seep lies deep in the western North Atlantic Ocean, far from the life-sustaining energy of the sun. Mussels blanketing the the seep rely on bacteria that use the methane to make energy. The process, known as chemosynthesis, forms the basis for life in the harsh environment and could help scientists better understand how organisms can survive under these types of extreme conditions.

"UNCW and FSU have done two previous cruises together and this is perhaps our biggest discovery," said UNCW researcher Dr. Steve Ross. "Studies of this kind and of these communities help scientists understand how life thrives in harsh environments, and perhaps even on other planets."

The new seep discovery is only the third documented seep site on the U.S. Atlantic Coast, and by far the most extensive; the two seep areas at this site are estimated to be at least a kilometer long and in places hundreds of meters across. Sea cucumbers were also seen tucked into the tight mounds of mussels and shrimp swam above them. Many species of fishes, including some with unusual behaviors, were also common around the unique ecosystem..

Don't decide to go there and kill it all off because there might be some money in it for someone/thing.

Some "discoveries" are better off left alone.

is what I can only imagine these "scientists" are saying behind the scenes.

that methane chemosynthesis is likely the basis for life on a lot of planets out there.

The challenge will be realizing a lot of it is actually alive since it's also likely to be very different from anything on this planet.

We worry about global climate change (and for good reason), but we have no evidence that shows that life can be wiped out on the planetary level. We've seen other planets, dead and lifeless, some even showing drastic climate changes in their planetary past. We also find life in unexpected places--as the OP shows.

In contrast, we have never seen what happens to a planet full of life as it looses its climate. The closest comparisons we can study are those in our own past. Over the last 500 million years we've gone from greenhouse to icehouse and suffered several flips.

Life survived all of it. I find that amazing.

Species come and go, but I believe that once life "infects" a planet, there is little short of a dying star that is going to burn it away.

If an impact is big enough, something a good bit bigger than what's suspected of wiping out the dinosaurs, the entire crust of the planet could be melted to a depth of several miles, pretty effectively sterilizing the planet.

Something like this, or even bigger:

It can be found in the book entitled, "The Quest" by Tom Brown. He writes about a vision from an old Apache man he knew when he was young and yes, that is part of the vision, the final part of it I might add.

When the "sky begins to bleed" the end is near.

Given the nature of the chemical make up of our sun, it will never ever go nova. As it exhausts it's supply of "fuel" it will increase in size (turning red), eventuaally engulfing the innner planets before it collapses on itself into a brown dwarf.

>>3rd Vision

After a period of four days of contemplation the Grandfather received the third vision. He saw the sky turning to a liquid and then blood red. The red colour of the sky was like nothing he had seen before in a sunrise or sunset. The colour was that of man, not of Nature, and it had a vile stench and texture. It seemed to burn the Earth wherever it touched. As sunset turned to night, the stars shone bright red, the colour never leaving the sky, and everywhere the cries of fear and pain were heard. The spirit warrior explained: "This, then, is the third sign, the night of the bleeding stars. It will become known throughout the world, for the sky in all lands will be red with the blood of the sky, day and night. It is then, with this sign of the third probable future, that there is no longer hope. Life on Earth as man has lived it will come to an end, and there can be no turning back, physically or spiritually. It is then, if things are not changed during the second sign, that man will surely know the destruction of the earth is at hand. It is then that the children of the earth must run to the wild places and hide. For when the sky bleeds fire, there will be no safety in the world of man."

The spirit next described the time frame: "From this time, when the stars bleed, to the fourth and final sign, will be four seasons of peace [i.e. one year]. It is in these four seasons that the children of the Earth must live deep in the wild places and find a new home, close to the Earth and the Creator. It is only the children of the Earth that will survive, and they must live the philosophy of the Earth, never returning to the thinking of man. And survival will not be enough, for the children of the Earth must also live close to the Spirit. So tell them not to hesitate if and when this third sign becomes manifest in the stars, for there are but four seasons to escape."

more than likely, there will be nothing left living on the planet by the time the sun even begins the very long process of going red giant.
