(111,169 posts)followed closely by "organic typewriter brush." I love the red racing stripes, too. Coloring like that usually warns predators that the prey is either unpalatable or poisonous.

(36,270 posts)...and the abdomen would normally be covered by wings, visible above as lateral wing pads behind the hind pair of legs. It's hard to see in the pic, but there doesn't appear to be a sharp ridge separating the antennae from the front of the face, although there might be (that red line at the very front of the head). The lack of such a ridge, and the two stout spines on the hind tibia suggest cercopidae, although the head looks too narrow.
The wax threads are common in a related sub-order, but not so common among the auchenorrhycha, which this fellow belongs to. It's a beauty. The pic lacks any sense of scale-- these are pretty small, typically.
