Mystery of 'Jelly Doughnut' Martian Rock Solved

PASADENA, Calif. February 15, 2014 (AP)

Scientists have solved the mystery of the "jelly doughnut" rock on Mars that appeared to come out of nowhere.

NASA said Friday that a wheel of the rover Opportunity broke it off a larger rock and then kicked it into the field of view.

The Internet was abuzz last month when the space agency released side-by-side images of the same patch of ground. Only one image showed the rock, which was white around the outside and dark red in the middle, and less than 2 inches wide.

It did this while it was in sleep mode. Or waking up before the cams we running. It left no marks on the surface. It left no other debris.

There's no science link other than a reference to NASA. I guess ABC wants us to do their research.

I'm reticent... reticent I say!

I still think it is landing material that was stuck in the arm out of sight that fell off. The information in this link has no new info. It's the first thing NASA reported when the pic was published.
