A haul of Viking treasure has been unearthed from a field in south west Scotland by an amateur using a metal detector.
Derek McLennan, a retired businessman from Ayrshire, made the find in Dumfriesshire in September.
In total, more than 100 items were recovered, including armbands, a cross and brooches.
Experts have said the discovery is one of the most important Viking hoards ever found in Scotland.

(50,130 posts)....was a program about the huge Dumfries estate. I wonder if you saw it. Very interesting.
Some of my ancestors were Vikings, too, but they ruled the Orkney Islands on the North side of Scotland. It's pretty fun to study the Viking era.

He done good.
Here in the States, the trove would be taken away and I don't think anyone would say thanks. In England and Scotland there is a
way they divide the value so no one loses even if the trove goes into a museum.
Pssst, my best find(s) a 1916 Lincoln cent in good condition, a 1943 Mercury dime in good condition and an 18K 24 inch figaro link necklace that weighed 47.8 grams. Along with a bunch of rings, coins and just great stuff.

(21,946 posts)keeps popping up! It's great, but couldn't some interesting stuff be found here in the United States?
Seriously, I have Viking descendants to shop for and this year they're all getting 1000 year old bronze fibulae bought on eBay. Little, common cloak pins. There's better stuff but it gets out of my price range really fast.

Impressive - the vikings was all over the Northern part of Europe - and beyond - some years ago - it was discovered a great treasure in DK - of coins from the Caliphate - from 700 AD... it was possible by trade - all the way from Damascus - from Baghdad and other trade city's of that part of the world - all the way up to the southern part of Denmark... Yeah - they had the habit on plunder and burning of Churches and monasteries - but also trading with the rest of the world - all the way up to Scandinavia...
