Scientists said they will reanimate a 30,000-year-old giant virus unearthed in the frozen wastelands of Siberia, and warned climate change may awaken dangerous microscopic pathogens.
Reporting this week in PNAS, the flagship journal of the US National Academy of Sciences, French researchers announced the discovery of Mollivirus sibericum, the fourth type of pre-historic virus found since 2003and the second by this team.
Before waking it up, researchers will have to verify that the bug cannot cause animal or human disease.

(45,984 posts)Before Pastor Huckabee suggests that the virus is God's punishment for gay marriage, I would like to suggest that it's God's punishment for deregulated capitalism and the dominance of the diabolical fossil fuel industry over public policy.
Even if one is an atheist, one would have to agree that my explanation is closer to the truth.

Remember, guys, that being mistaken is not an option.

I know we vaccinate with dead viruses, but I'm not sure that's quite the same thing.
