A Sad Day- National Geographic gets Foxed

National Geographic magazine will begin to operate on a for-profit basis under a partnership with 21st century Fox, an empire controlled by media mogul Rupert Murdoch, according to a report Wednesday in the Washington Post. The change is expected later this year.

The monthly magazine has been a nonprofit publication since its founding in 1888, according to the Post.

The National Geographic Society, which operated the publication, will remain a non-profit organization, according to the newspaper.

The Society's partnership with Fox will be called National Geographic Partners and will include the National Geographic cable channel and the Society's other media assets.

The National Geographic Partners will be governed by a board comprised of an equal number of representatives from Fox and National Geographic, according to the report.
