Lizard regenerates six tails following injury in Argentina, setting new record
Updated about an hour ago
An Argentinian lizard has set a new record by regenerating six tails at the same time following an injury.
The young black-and-white tegu was brought to ecologist Nicolas Pelegrin, at the Institute of Animal Diversity and Ecology in Argentina, by environmental officers.
The lizard had a severe injury throughout the length of its tail most likely due to a sharp object that cut off the tissue, according to a report by Dr Pelegrin and Suelem Muniz Leao.
But the tail had not been properly severed, causing the tail to regenerate with multiple tips in the "first case of hexafurcation ever reported", Dr Pelegrin told New Scientist.
