Stephen Hawking submitted the final version of his last scientific paper just two weeks before he died, and it lays the theoretical groundwork for discovering a parallel universe.
Hawking, who passed away on Wednesday aged 76, was co-author to a mathematical paper which seeks proof of the "multiverse" theory, which posits the existence of many universes other than our own.
The paper, called "A Smooth Exit from Eternal Inflation", had its latest revisions approved on March 4, ten days before Hawking's death.
According to The Sunday Times newspaper, the paper is due to be published by an unnamed "leading journal" after a review is complete.

A theory explaining how we might detect parallel universes and a prediction for the end of the world was completed by Stephen Hawking shortly before he died, it has emerged.
The renowned theoretical physicist was working right up until his death last week on his final work A Smooth Exit from Eternal Inflation which is currently being reviewed by a leading scientific journal. In it he predicted that the universe would eventually end when stars run out of energy.
But Hawking also theorised in his final work that scientists could find alternate universes using probes on space ships, allowing humans to form an even better understanding of our own universe, what else is out there and our place in the cosmos.
The physicists final work was published alongside his co-author, Professor Thomas Hertog, of KU Leuven University in Belgium.

But man, Stephen is going to have a helluva legacy.
Raise a glass to that guy.

(8,012 posts)I'm looking forward to reading his paper but will need to read the explanations of his paper in a way I can understand. Wow, what a amazing man he was...R.I.P.

(40,416 posts)The paper is likely full of stuff like complex tensor analysis.
Quantum field theory is not for the faint of heart. Gird your loins, my friend.
Good luck. We'll be expecting a report from you.

(721 posts)To say the least.
So, an alternate universe ... multitudes of them.
I could make a wisecrack, it's almost irresistible about the current political situation and where Trump and co. could find themselves, in an alternate universe at the bottom of a golden pissy pot.
But that would be demeaning to the profound implications of what Steven Hawkings is saying. (I know, I just did it, sorry.)
Thank you God, for minds like Hawkings to keep us sane, even if mystified.
I was so sad to hear he was gone. So few voices that make sense these days.
