Tracking Katharine the shark: Here's what OCEARCH has learned from her in five years

Katharine, a 2,300-pound white shark that often surfaces along Florida's east coast, has traveled nearly 37,000 miles from the north Atlantic Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico.

In the five and a half years since OCEARCH, a shark research and advocacy team, has been tracking Katharine, she's gained quite a following on the Treasure and Space coasts.

Katharine has her own Twitter account with 58,700 followers — by comparison, TCPalm has 50,200 followers — and articles written about her escapades are some of the most-read stories on TCPalm.com.

Lessons from a shark
Large female white sharks like Katharine experience a two-year migratory loop from their mating site, Fischer said. They mate every other year, giving birth, on average, to seven, 4-foot-long, 45-pound pups.
