There's now a crowd-funding site for science -- like a scientific version of Kickstarter

This is the coolest thing I've seen in a while: http://www.rockethub.com/projects/scifund

The projects typically seem to aim for $1000 to $2000 (a few up to $5000) and to have goals like "using sound to inexpensively monitor impacts of urbanization on freshwater habitats" or measuring "biodiversity preservation along streams in oil palm plantations of SE Asia" or building a satellite webcam for penguins or studying bluejay decision-making or "helping children who get lost frequently."

Just reading about the projects is fascinating -- and if this really takes off like Kickstarter )which has seen some million-dollar hauls lately for things like video games and webcomes), the possibilities for science that does not depend on either government or corporations to supply the money and set the agenda are endless.
