1.7 mil.-year-old extinct human species fossil found in China

An analysis of ancient stone artifacts found in the Hubei Province shows that Homo erectus, an extinct species of humans, lived in a vast area of China approximately 1.7 million years ago, LiveScience reported on Aug. 15.

Stone blades were discovered 90 miles (150 km) west of Beijing at Nihewan Basin ㅡ home to 60 Stone Age artifact sites ㅡ where tools as rudimentary as stone flakes, known as the Oldowan, have been unearthed.

Scientists have been long uncertain about the precise age of these sites.

To resolve this mystery, scientists analyzed the earth above, below, and in the sites where the stone blades were found.
