Related: About this forumSo quite predictably, it is open season on atheists in GD right now.
We are bad people.

Congratulations on your fine arguing skills!
Edited to add: That was some master......baiting.

I'd have beaten my computer to death in effigy after a few of that guy's comments.

(34,582 posts)I missed a lot of interesting comments after I left. I guess someone commenting that the bible was "Bullshit" really ruffled some feathers.

Mr.Bill
(24,238 posts)that freedom of religion is important, because some people obviously need it to survive. I just shake my head and move on. You can't change their minds.
One thing I do when they accuse us of forcing Atheism on them is remind them that no Atheist ever knocked on their door to try to convert them.

Anyway, if Obama's a man of great faith then he's allowed to ignore your Constitution. Isn't that how it works?
Unless it's Islam, of course.

If that's true, I wonder who's been getting my checks for the last 9 years 'cause that MFer owes me some serious money.
Edit: sorry, right-wing trolls, not shills. I thought we couldn't call individuals trolls, but apparently calling entire groups of people trolls is A-OK. Charming.

(3,657 posts)Wow anyone critical of all the religion at the inaugural is a troll, bullied and threatened
Doncha know, you will be getting a pizza delivery. Hard to believe but I think Huffington is more tolerant. The worse thing that happens there is your post is deleted

(4,261 posts)Jews, Muslims, Hindus etc. "Sit down and shut up it's a Christian country."
Or
Gays, "Sit down and shut up it's a straight country."
Or
People of colour, "Sit down and shut up it's a white country."
But,
"Sit down and shut up it's a believing country." Is just dandy.
"Whining" to remove any doubt that atheists have legitimate complaints and the right to complain.

(48,181 posts)Atheists were ignored.
uriel1972
(4,261 posts)but I do remember the one they had for a campaign event "Gays are killing our children."
That hurt a lot. It really was the tipping point of my feelings towards Obama. He has clawed some ground back, but I remember.

(5,349 posts)I can't count the number of posts I saw that were variations on, "OMG, SHUT UP, IT'S JUST ONE PRAYER!" as if that somehow made it okay that the guy's a huge homophobe. He also wrote a completely dickish Tweet when Christopher Hitchens died but that was more recent (2011). Warren is basically Jerry Falwell with more benign packaging, which few people seemed to get.
awoke_in_2003
(34,582 posts)of course, this year was better because we had a more tolerant believer in bullshit.
Arugula Latte
(50,566 posts)Also, how dare you even discuss this on a liberal discussion board?!
Also, shut the fuck up -- you're militant to even bring it up!
Also, you're whining!
Also, you're not in the majority, so, let me reiterate -- shut the fuck up!
Got that?!

(14,554 posts)Yes, because doing something because of "tradition" is ok. Because what has been done in the past is always the best way to do something.

I just wanted to say thanks to you (and everyone else who did the same) for wading into all that over there and standing up for people who had a problem with it. What a lot of people don't seem to realize is that the First Amendment that gives them the right to believe (or not believe) in whatever way they choose is the same First Amendment that gives other people the right to say that they think those beliefs are weird/silly/not supported by evidence. But say something as mild as, "Wow, there was a lot of religion in the inauguration and it made me feel excluded," and you get to stand back and watch people's heads explode.
Maybe they'll have settled down by next election cycle, but it seems we're supposed to go back under the bus 'til then.

(9,356 posts)At least we atheists didn't cost the Democrats the election. We'd never hear the end of that.
Sometimes I just slay myself. And no, you, wise-ass in the back row, that's not a promise.
The idea that a few non-believers on an Internet yak-board could influence the election in...oh, just about any way...always tickles the Rick Warren out of me.
I still can't believe they fling that one at us every 4 years. Usually when the Freedom From Religion Foundation commits some atrocity, like actually standing up for the First Amendment instead of playing Internet Constitutional Lawyer on places like DU.
To partly explain my absence, I've been searching out places more like the old DU. You know, where conversations aren't hijacked by some thin-skinned professional grudge-holder who is still pissed that they never got to be Hall Monitor in junior high.
And get off my lawn...
(I still visit Religion pretty often, but strictly for the lulz, as the kids say nowadays.)

In fact, now that I think about it, I always thought that the Democrats were the progressive party.
Otherwise, what good are they?
