So happy to be free of this nonsense.
Now I find it both disgusting and hilarious

(5,349 posts)more than taking a stand and doing the right thing. If there are liberal progressive Catholics who won't leave the church over something as monumentally perverse and just flat-out wrong as a decades-long coverup of child-molesting priests, and will continue to attend and donate money despite knowing about it, institutionalized homophobia and misogyny aren't likely to motivate them to call it quits, either.

(2,380 posts)sorry. Too much of an oxymoron. Can't wrap my head around it.

(5,349 posts)If a person won't leave the church after finding out that it's been hiding and protecting child molesters for decades, I'm not sure I want to know what more it would take.

(3,622 posts)not decades. It is disturbing to my moral and ethical values that there are so many in the catholic religion, who know what happened to children in the church, and have not left or the fact that they think they can make a difference by staying. Delusion is the only word that I can think of at this time.

(5,349 posts)I can't think of any other reasons otherwise rational people would support and even defend an organization whose hierarchy actively participates in such repugnant behavior. It's an international criminal conspiracy when it comes right down to it, but even many liberal believers won't admit that. My favorite cop-out: staying and continuing to give their time--and more importantly, money--while asserting that they're working to "effect change from within." Yeah. That's working out really well so far, isn't it?
(And centuries? Holy shit, even worse than I thought.)

I couldn't care less myself either. My main wish would be that they'd reverse policy on contraceptives, which is leading to massive overpopulation and human suffering in the developing world. It's a fairly obese chance that that's going to happen, of course.

(49,533 posts)But everyone thinks their religion is the most bestest EVAH and the Catholics are certainly no exception. If their predecessors hadn't forced so many to convert or be killed, there wouldn't be so many of them and no one would care.

(18,219 posts)I didn't even know that there was a new pope yet. Just found out. There has been pope news for months now. Pope is stepping down, it is almost the pope's last day, it is the last benediction that the pope will make, look where the pope will go to retire, the cardinals are heading for Rome, they are in Rome, who will they pick, are there any Americans who might be picked, who are they, the cardinals have started deliberating, black smoke, black smoke, black smoke, black smoke.....I was poped out before they got to a new pope.
