Secular Student Alliance strives to give students a safe place

This sounds pretty cool. I wasn't aware of the Secular Student Alliance but it appears to have really blossomed on campuses nationwide.

HUNTINGTON -- Established in Ohio in the year 2000, the Secular Student Alliance is an organization dedicated to scientific education, teaching critical thinking, and social activism promoting secularism as well as human-based ethics.

Currently there are more than 400 SSA groups at high schools and colleges around the world. While the club is open to students of all different backgrounds and faiths, the club often serves as a support network for atheist and agnostic students who feel ostracized. The Marshall University group was established in November and started meeting regularly in the spring semester.

"We just started meeting regularly and it's been pretty popular," said Adam Hamby, president of the Marshall chapter. "The weather has caused fewer people to show up for meetings but that's true for just about any club. The club was a little difficult at first to start up. You need seven members to officially have a club on campus. I didn't know seven people who would specifically would want to start this group. I knew there were a lot of secular students and atheistic students, but finding them was the difficult part. So I spent some months last fall asking around and found some of my best friends. Then we had to write a group constitution which we modeled after the national Secular Student Alliance. Now we're just trying to get the word out."

Hamby said the group wants to give atheism a better reputation.... MORE

for putting all that work into this organization. Young people really are stepping up.
