Atheists & Agnostics
Related: About this forumDo members here want blockings posted in the group.
Since the other thread was self-deleted, I am interested in finding out what the members want. I think all three hosts try to create a room that meets the needs and desires of our members here. Since I have started hosting, we have posted the blocks in an effort to have transparency and because a lot of members don't keep reading the info to see who is blocked. We didn't initially, but moved to locking the blocking notification to discourage grave dancing.
If people here don't want these posted, we can stop. Again, we want this room to be a safe haven that our atheist and agnostic members enjoy.
And please, no grave dancing about the recent (or other) block, please.

(111,245 posts)It didn't appear on my front page. Perhaps the poster who said it did was a little confused.

(9,288 posts)This recent episode shows why this is a good idea. If these disruptor are going to run to other forums to beat us over the head about every "perceived" slight, it makes sense to have a thread to point to so that we can explain why they were blocked.
Your policy of locking the threads to prevent grave dancing also shows that this is about principle and transparency and nothing else.
I know im new here but I vote to keep your policy.

(600 posts)I am unsure if my perspective adds that much but here goes...
I think that being transparent is a good thing especially for a group that is subject to as much derision as (us) this one . While I was not especially offended by a recent (tone deaf) post here I don't know any of the history of the poster or how it might be interpreted given the general history of the A/A group and it's relationship with the "other group". That said, it is apparent that you and the group mods are trying to provide a reasonable framework from which to make these decisions and make them transparent. As such you should be applauded. Please continue with your explanations of blocks.
That said, when will it be acceptable for me to make a post inquiring as to the beginning and nature of the members atheism without being suspected as being a disrupter? I am genuinely curious as to how we all arrived here.

(22,340 posts)Thanks for the input. We (the hosts) aren't out to just drop the banhammer on newbies. We just want to make sure that this forum stays the comfortable place it seems to be for the atheists/agnostics on DU. I think all of our (again, hosts') actions are decided on toward that end.
Thanks for your feedback and I look forward to your continued contribution to the group.

(13,485 posts)It's important to know who we are dealing with when traveling the rest of the site. I've had an eye opener this evening on an individual who I thought was sincere until I read up on his/her reported statistics. It makes me want to know exactly who we are dealing with from now on. If I know who's been blocked here, I'll know where they stand elsewhere.

(18,219 posts)and think it is a good idea to let everyone know the reasons. I also think that blocking the post is a wise choice.
Thanks for all the work you do.....all of you hosts.

(6,261 posts)I'm probably the last person to figure this out, but I only just now noticed that we get a list of blocked people when we click on the "about this group" button. Bit of a trip down memory lane, that. Funny how many of them are PPR'ed now anyway.
I don't know why this is so amusing, but I've been going through the other groups and forums to see who is blocked from them.

And for f's sake - everyone knows the rules on this site. I poke around safe haven's I know I'm not welcome in and have never posted. It's pretty easy.

(654 posts)No downside to posting them, keeping folks aware of those who have difficulty comprehending simple rule systems isn't a bad thing. As others have pointed out it allows a method for providing other forums with a link to keep people honest.
It's unfortunate to me that a group of people who are on a website that clearly is positioned for advocacy of Democratic positions and progressive ideals can't have an honest discussion regarding their beliefs without feeling threatened. Just because we disagree on certain philosophical or religious positions doesn't mean we both don't love our nation dearly and want that nation to be the best it can be. Just because we disagree on the direction the party takes at times doesn't mean we would ever pull the other lever it just means we have a different approach.
You might not like my approach or position any more than I like yours but I will give you the benefit of believing that in your heart you are committed to making this a better nation through election of Democrats.
