I'm the one that alerted on the poopyhead post.

Or is it poopiehead? Someone will have to let me know

Anyways, I alerted on it, and left soon after. Reading other threads, I sense this is clearly this is a huge deal, and so I thought I'd come back and make a few comments.

First off, I would like to make where I stand clear. I'm a strong atheist that would probably be best described as antitheist. I hold very no respect for religion or religious beliefs, beyond someone's right to have them.

I fully recognize that there are a whole bunch of poopyhead-ish things going on in the other forum, and that many of you put up with way more crap than I would. I realize that this is supposed to be a safe haven, and I absolutely think we should be able to have discussions about what happens in the other forum, as well as be able to show a general lack of respect for religion and the religious. I get that there are disruptors in that other group that come and disrupt here as well, and that for many of you this is tiring, if not infuriating. In my opinion, Warren Stupidity's post should not have been hidden, and I would have voted so on that jury.

That said, I thought the poopyhead post crossed a line. It added nothing of value to the conversation other than the first sentence, and that could absolutely have been put in a constructive way. I alerted on it, and in all honesty, it probably would have been alerted on anyway. In no way was my intent for the alert to disrupt, but instead to ask for a higher standard.

This is a good group, and I like the conversations and people here. Please, keep it civil. That post wasn't really offensive, but it was pretty childish and it was unnecessary.

I'm now a self-proclaimed poopyhead, according to another thread, so have at me.

(Note to possible jurors, I know this is pretty meta, but half the recent posts here are. Figured one more wouldn't hurt, and it might soften the tone here to learn it was an atheist, not a believer, that alerted. Or so I can hope.)

Seems to me like things have been exceptionally heated as of late.

Mini verbal wars have been rage between here the other forum and the other other forum and tensions have been running high. So it makes sense that there would be people venting and seeing those threads get shut down for what appears to frivolous reasons only adds to the wave of resentment.

I think it best to give other posters understanding and some breath to cool down. If you are wanting a higher standard of discussion it might be better to be an example of that standard rather than shutting down people who are seeking catharsis. Especially when they are using rather tame language and euphemisms that are meant to ease a bit of the bite from their commentary.

Understanding goes a long way. Especially in a forum like this where we are all subject to some sort of inequity on a nearly daily basis. Especially if one is being a poopyhead....cause that shit stinks.

And I can even understand your reasons, but I think I would have gone a different way.

As an atheist on DU, we don't have the luxury of never getting a hide. And given the harsh consequences for a hide these days (not being able to host and after 5, getting a vacation), I don't think I could have done that to one of our own just to make a point. Tensions have been high lately and I would have probably sent a PM to the hosts or neogreen to ask that it be reviewed.

"It would have been alerted on anyway" would not make me feel any better in your shoes.

Things will calm down again. They always do. And, in 90 days, neogreen's hide will be expunged. But I just can't see your actions having the same effect that you want them to (to raise the standard). Given some of the other words that he/she could have used, poopyhead is so mild as to be laughable. I just can't see myself alerting on something like that when I know that we (Atheists) are held to a much higher standard than much of DU.

Why would you put the note to jurors in there? I can't see any of us alerting on your post and the others who come in here to alert certainly aren't going to. You're their new best friend.

honesty appreciation. I can't know if someone is honest till they have earned some trust. Has this poster earned enough trust in this forum to be patently trusted? Not as far as I see. That can be remedied by the poster, but till then you won't find me calling them honest. It's just words in a forum.

It's too bad people are intimidated by religious bullies or pseudo-atheist housekeepers (probably the same thing), but I know they have an effect. It's hard to live and let live within any reasonable margin when there are those who don't believe in the concept.

I've only had one post hidden, ever, and it was because of them. I might like to serve on MIRT or host a forum one day and can't do it with a hide on my record.

Then again, some days I wonder why it matters. We have a much higher standard here... poopiehead gets hidden but assholes doesn't, for example. I KNOW that the jury system is borked, but it still sucks when you can't catch a break from the regular people here at DU.

It's not just the religious bullies and pseudo-atheist housekeepers...it's that they are far more likely to draw a jury with at least 4 people who will hide our posts because they don't like us than we are if we were to alert on their posts (which I don't even bother to do most of the time).

90 days after a hide your profile is clear. Personally I think that is too long but as it stands now you should put your name on the hosts list. I also think MER-T has different rules where you are allowed to serve as long as you don't have your transparency page shown but still have a hide or two. You'd have to check on that one though.

If you think that a post doesn't belong in this group, there is an SOP alert option. Use that. We have a squad of our friends out there who monitor every post here for anything they can possibly CS alert on, adding to that is not helpful. People get locked out of DU for CS alerts.

...someone who is not banned from posting here.

I fully accept your criticism as valid and to the effect of "guys can we at least not resort to childish language".

You are not a cranium covered with fecal material.

But, I am upset by the apparent knee-jerk alerting and hiding of Warren's (and others) post in our "safe haven".

His was not:
disruptive - it did not stifle anyone's ability to discuss or debate
hurtful - it did not call any one person out,
rude - there was no language that was offensive or vulgar
insensitive - it was not unfeeling or thoughtless
it was not over-the-top or otherwise inappropriate

It was sarcastic and was trying to make a point, but if those modes are "over the top" then debate on DU is doomed.

Plus, I think my point is still valid, people should not be allowed to alert in a safe haven from which they are banned.

That post wasn't really offensive, but it was pretty childish and it was unnecessary.

So you decided that someone should be taught a lesson for...what, daring to waste your time?

Bad idea to point out that you're an atheist, by the way. You end up being seen as either a) Just another antitheist* (your word) hater by one faction or b) Just another "I'm an atheist, but..." by the other.

(*On DU this is a crime equivalent to failing to venerate the military or even Obama)

The post didn't add anything but it somehow required action?

Alerting on stuff that should either be laughed at or laughed off just makes the alerting option impotent anyway.

Just kidding. Though, if you could use the SOP alert when you see something that runs along these lines in the future, that would be awesome. The type of alert you used can actually lock people out of DU for 60 or 90 days or something like that, if they have a total of five.

Granted that person would own some of that responsibility, of course, you don't get to 5 for nothing, on a single post, but we do have a mechanism here in the Safe Haven to clear out things you feel are a problem in this way without using that alert.

Who do just fine keeping posts that are off topic out of the group. If you think you can do a better job than they do, then please put your name in the rings and petition for a spot as host.

Until that happen, actions like yours just come across as petty. We're all adults, and capable of determining for ourselves if a topic is acceptable or not. If it is, it's talked up. If it's not, it sinks.

We don't need another nanny here---we have an internet full of them who are happy to have manufactured outrage at innocuous posts.

Thanks for adding to the cacophony of their oh-so-very-concerned voices that obliterate real discussion by their alert trolling which keeps important voices and contrarian viewpoints silent

If you don't think there is a bias against atheist posts sent to a jury, look at the bigoted shit that was alerted on **and left** in my post about homophobia. And then look at the absolutely bullshit hides by atheist posters.

Thanks for your contribution to our group you really did wonders for decreasing acrimony by that bullshit move. You could have asked the poster to delete. You could have notified the hosts. You didn't do that. You went below the belt and now that poster has a hide for no reason that will be on their profile for 3 months. Great job

Actually your alert was self important, pretty childish and unnecessary. Learn the ropes around here before you step on your perceived ants. It's better to join in, participate, read up, understand the field, then decide if you belong here. But just dropping in to clean house is self aggrandizing at the least.

You're free to express yourself here just like everyone else but it's not reasonable to decide how others do the same.
