only because I recently finished reading "The Blind Watchmaker."

Otherwise would probably have gone with #3.

Yeah, god didn't want people to know stuff, and punished them for trying to (making the woman the culprit in the process). That's some scary shit to base a way of life on.

2. What We Should Teach
Mon Oct 20, 2014, 08:28 AM
Oct 2014

We should teach about the winter solstice and how the church replaced it with Christmas.
We should teach about the spring equinox and how the church replaced it with Easter.
-
I couldn't be more serious about this. The solstices and equinoxes are actual events and tell us more about our place in the universe than any religion. Just ask a kid when the winter solstice is and you will probably get a blank stare, but ask when Christmas is and you will always get the right answer. This is known as replacing reality with myth. That is just the beginning of why religion is evil and not beneficial. Is it any wonder we are all fucked up?

From my perspective that makes religion innately flawed and it deserves to be nothing more than to be part of a museum exhibit themed "mistakes of our past."

I still have yet to see anyone explain why religion is required to do any of the good that humans do. Non-believers run charities. Non-believers volunteer and help. So at best, it's a wash. But then as you say, you consider the baggage religion brings with it and it becomes clear why many of us speak out against it.

We learned about solstice and equinox events, their astronomical and cultural meanings and how our cultural holidays relate to that. It didn't seem to be a big deal at the time.

I went to a Catholic school for 7 years then switched to public schooling. I didn't learn about soltices until college and talk about Stonehenge. I became interested in astronomy and learned the rest on my own.

Partially because of its (imo) eloquence and partially because it reminds me of watching Carl Sagan on Cosmos say we're made from star-stuff.

It was a difficult choice, though, since I love a good pun and I love pumpkin pie.

Mostly because Carolyn Porco is all kinds of scientific awesome.

Also, she's rumored to be the model for the heroine of Sagan's Contact.
