Religion In The Comics - 001

In 1946, Catholic Publications, Inc. of Connecticut, began printing Catholic Comics. This is the second issue. Issues 1-4 are not known to exist. This was a common practice in publishing. It gave the impression that this was a title with a past publishing record. It was also sometimes used to establish a second class postage for subscription purposes. I will make no comment at the dishonesty of such practices by a religious publisher. Besides, maybe they did publish issues 1-4.

So what is going on in this cover? There is a recurring character named Father O'Malley who usually has a 6-7 page story in each issue. However, the particular story in this issue has no scene in it that this cover portrays. Are the two students lovers? The Father looks surprised, but happy. The boy looks smugly proud. The girl seeks comfort in the arms of the nun, who looks accusingly at the boy. Jesus has no comment.

"Son O' God" comics. Shut down by the Christers threatening to use a 300-yr-old blasphemy law. In the United States, in the 20th century.

Considering the season, this cover seem appropriate:
