more rampaging Christians

"a homegrown American extremist"

I'll bet you FOX is going to be all over this one! (not)

I can't recall the last time I heard of an atheist going on a shooting rampage. Anyone?

What is it about being a "Christian" that makes some people act like McQuilliams?

WaPo article here:

"Police believe McQuilliams was associated with the Phineas Priesthood, an anti-Semitic, anti-multiculturalism group that opposes biracial relationships, same-sex marriage, taxation and abortion. Authorities found a copy of “Vigilantes of Christendom,” a book linked to the group, in the rental van McQuilliams used during the attacks, NBC Austin affiliate KXAN reported."

Some find love in the Bible. Some find hatred and killing of infidels. Some find racism, misogyny and abuse. And this is why that book should IN NO WAY serve in ANY fashion as a guide for government or law. It's too volatile and it attracts psychotic kooks with guns.

When will we outgrow this obsession with religion?

as are the skinhead movement and the militia movement and the KKK and all the other freak shows out there. So it is no surprise that the crazies are religious also.

Crazies are everywhere. There are of course crazy atheists (Stalin and Ayn Rand, anyone?)

But I think religion gets more of them because, well, without reason and logic, you can construct any argument for any kind of behavior. Religions support that more than atheism. And of course religion gets a free pass atheism does not enjoy.

Hell, sometimes I think that we atheists are a little crazy for trying to fight the system instead of just faking it. That would make our lives easier, although it would be dishonest. But there is a little crazy in all of us.

Crazy does not mean gullible, but gullible can easily lead to crazy when you believe too much in whatever it is you are being fed.

Am I crossing lines by using the term "crazy"????? For the record, I am not meaning insane or mentally deranged.

I thought it must be from "The Ruling Class" but apparently not. Very famous movie and it's right on the tip of my brain but I can't quite get it.

Setting: some gents are discussing a career for a son.

The quote, more or less: "Business, if he has any brains at all. And if not - the Army or the Church."

starring Peter Sellers (union rep), Ian Charmichael (naive son), Richard Attenborough (dodgy business fixer) and Terry-Thomas (cynical posh manager). Ring any bells? I can't find it in any list of quotes, though, or a full length version on line.
