Dawkins annoying the faithful on Twitter again...

Context: in Canada, a soccer team from a private Islamic school refused to play against a team with 2 girls on it. The girls volunteered to bench themselves and sit out the game.

Dawkins comment:

"This is sheer bigotry."
"But it's Islamic bigotry."
"Oh SORRY that's different. Islamic bigotry gets a free pass."

Yep, that pretty much nailed it. (No offense intended to Xians.)

The Islamic coach insists this has NOTHING to do with bigotry, nosiree:

“Free mixing is generally something we do not do, more so out of respect than anything,” he said.

Abdool-Karim said the team tried to have an open dialogue and explain to the other team that it is their belief...

If they face the same team again he doesn’t think they will play them.

“We want inclusion for all. We are trying to find a solution to a problem,” he said.

So it's really all about respect for females. And INCLUSION! And of course, all together now - Sincerely Held Religious Beliefs.

If I believed in a world of happy endings - the all-male Islamic school team would find itself in a match with an all-female Jewish team. And get its ass kicked.

Bonus Hilarity in the same Twitter thread - Muslim cleric declares the Earth is shaped like an ostrich egg, JUST AS PREDICTED IN THE KORAN!1! Checkmate, science!

...pity the poor bastards whose parents sent them there.

So much respect for women that they will not play against them. No, that's actually sexism, and it comes right out of your magic book.

http://www.citynews.ca/2015/05/28/exclusive-muslim-boys-high-school-soccer-team-refuses-to-play-against-team-with-2-girls/

The young women voluntarily benched themselves for the second half so that the game could continue. Personally, I think they should have forfeited the game if they didn't want to play against women. Better yet, they should disband the team, since the rule in Western Ontario is that if there is no women's team available, the men's team must allow women to play after a successful tryout.

Like in this scene an alleged liberal right here on DU called "beautiful" where female Muslims were segregated from the men during a service at the National Cathedral. (Never mind how that SHOULD be an oxymoron in this country.)

The women were included by being allowed to be in the same room with the men. "BEAUTIFUL!"

How hilarious that one of the people who spits bile at the mere mention of the name Richard Dawkins provides a perfect example illustrating the truth of what he said.

In western cultures, women used to be similarly (un)included and (dis)respected, but they finally got fed up and raised hell, with the help of some menfolk.

I hear about the occasional solo female who opposes these tenets, but haven't heard of any organized dissent. Yet.

Egyptian lawyer and liberal. I used to read his weekly column in the Egyptian Gazette and wonder how he stayed out of jail.

I distinctly remember one of his columns, about modern Egyptian women: "Your grandmothers had more freedom than you do today. They fought in the 1919 Revolution."

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tarek_Heggy

One woman in that Revolution was Sofiya Zaghloul, wife of the Egyptian nationalist Sa'ad Zaghloul.

A British friend in Alexandria told this story. Once he was walking in downtown Alexandria with an Egyptian guy. The British guy noticed they were walking up Sofiya Zaghloul Street:
British Guy: "So who was Sofiya Zaghloul, then?"
Egyptian Guy: "A hero of our 1919 Revolution. And the wife of Sa'ad Zaghloul."
British Guy: "So what did old Sofiya do in the Revolution? Marry the right guy?"
Egyptian Guy: "She shot 2 British officers."

Whether that story is true or not, Sofiya Zaghloul was an impressive woman. She fought to modernize Egypt, especially in the area of education for girls and women. She was one of the first women to appear in public unveiled. And she was so popular she eventually earned the fairly awesome title, "Mother of the Egyptians."

12. Muslim women aren't even allowed inside some mosques.

I found that out the hard way one Friday morning, when I was wandering the back streets of Alexandria, Egypt.

Turned a corner down an alley, and suddenly found myself facing a whole gaggle of women wearing their Friday Prayer Day best. They were clearly not happy to see me, and glared until I moved on. Which didn't take long. It was a very awkward moment.

Egyptian friends told me I had blundered into the "women's section" of a mosque. Which happened to be located outside, in the alley.

Some Egyptian mosques do allow women inside. Though they are often relegated to a small, cramped room in the back. Many times I went out to dinner etc. with Egyptian men, and they would stop to do their prayers at a mosque while I waited outside. I don't remember ever seeing any women in the main room of the mosques - only men.

Since the 2011 revolution, some Egyptian women have pushed for more liberal rules about allowing women into mosques.

Which shouldn't be an issue anyway. Most of Islam's Sophisticated Theologians seem to agree that nothing in the Koran or Hadiths specifically bans women from mosques. Mohammed himself allegedly let women in, though segregated from men. But gradually the idea spread that women should mostly do their worshipping at home, and not at the mosque.

At least that's one Official Story. There are others, depending on which of the 9,467* schools of Islamic theology we care to research.

*For nitpicking Alerters, that's a slight exaggeration.

Apparently orthodox jews trying to ban women from driving isn't really discrimination because reasons.

And hey, no one is making those women attend that segregated mosque so who cares?
