Why is it that many atheists and agnostics feel the need to denigrate and mock what others believe?

I have never faulted or put down or insulted anyone who believes differently than I do - atheists, agnostics, Baptists, Muslims, Jews, Mormons, etc. What other people believe in and how they worship or don't worship is their business, not mine, and it's their right to do so.

Imagine if this post had pictured the Koran and the same content had appeared. People would be yelling about prejudice and a few other related things.

I don't like cults. I am alarmed and sorry when I see people taken in by cults, whether they are religious, political or based on some kind of personal fan following. Religion is a different matter. Let people have their faith.

It's just that Christianity happens to be the majority religion in America so it gets the most criticism. More importantly, it has a huge influence on public policy. If people kept their faith to themselves, it wouldn't be a big deal. But as long as it keeps getting thrown in our faces, expect a response.

Same goes for Islam, Judaism, Scientology, etc. etc.

Leviticus 20:13

If a man has sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They are to be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.

Deuteronomy 17

If there be found among you, within any of thy gates which the LORD thy God giveth thee, man or woman, that hath wrought wickedness in the sight of the LORD thy God, in transgressing his covenant; 17:3 And hath gone and served other gods, and worshipped them, either the sun, or moon, or any of the host of heaven, which I have not commanded; 17:4 And it be told thee, and thou hast heard of it, and enquired diligently, and, behold, it be true, and the thing certain, that such abomination is wrought in Israel; 17:5 Then shalt thou bring forth that man or that woman, which have committed that wicked thing, unto thy gates, even that man or that woman, and shalt stone them with stones, till they die.

Your falling into the same trap everyone else does by confusing believers and belief. The Catholic Church has LGBTQIA bigoty written into it's code. The southern Baptist Church just released a statement condemning homosexuality. Most religions are based on misogynistic ideals.

Further more even if it's on the front page you don't go into a protected group and post stuff like this. Posts from the AA group made it to the front page all the time, and when I realized where I was I politely apologized for intruding and left.

This is the reason atheists post this kind of stuff, because we need to vent about the world and how steeped in religion it is that people don't respect our beliefs so much they intrude into our spaces and say we should respect others.

https://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=thread&address=10029549776&info=1#recs

https://www.democraticunderground.com/10029549776#post220

Religion, like conservatism,is a concept not a person. It has no feelings and has done and continues to do us great harm. From justifying bigotry against us to the use of mental torture in the form of the doctrine of salvation via faith. Some of us had to spend countless nights unable to sleep because of fear that our doubts would cause our souls to be condemned to eternal hellfire and suffering.

Not to mention the near ubiquitousness of how it is constantly shoved down our throats and how we are told we are immoral and devious for not believing! From courthouse monuments to presidents telling us we are not real Americans because this is one nation under God:

https://en.m.wikiquote.org/wiki/Talk:George_H._W._Bush

If I only had a PENNY for every time I came across religion forced upon me! Oh wait here is one! What is that written on the side? "In God we Trust"

...

But let's ignore all that shall we. How dare atheists in their own safe room push back against religion? How dare they criticize and mock a nigh omnipresent source of hatred against them! It's like they think they have rights or something...

various interpretations of Christian ethics and morals to laws that apply to us.

I'm MALE and I've experienced religious influence on my ability to access family planning. I'm an edge case, and not even female, and *I've* experienced it. So let's just take a moment and consider the various ways in which a predominantly Christian culture shits on women at every turn, for accessing birth control, for wanting comprehensive sex ed, for accessing abortion, for having careers, for having more than one sexual partner, for enjoying sex at all, for frankly doing anything but getting married and staying home to raise the carpet goblins.

Lets take a moment to ponder religious opposition to death with dignity, and my access to end my life at my choosing if and when I am suffering beyond the support of palliative care. It happened to my dad. It happened to my uncle. It happened to BOTH my grandfathers. Alzheimer's and a couple other degenerative neurological diseases run in my family. Let's ponder a moment on the OVERWHELMINGLY and almost UNIVERSALLY Christian (mostly catholic) opposition to physician assisted suicide in the US.

I was going to make a comprehensive list, but fuck it, we're already well beyond the scope and bounds of how far RELIGION (specifically christianity) should intrude into my life by way of the laws of the United States of America, a Republic, with a Constitution that expressly forbids such intrusion.

Religion is a stupid, ancient, tribalistic mythos that deserves to be shaken off like our childhood toys, and there's a REASON that religiousity trends DOWN with Education (less than 7% of the members of the National Academy of Sciences is religious) and college degrees, trends down among liberals and progressives, and trends down among higher IQ's, however flawed measuring IQ might be.

It's stupid. It tells us nothing about ourselves, the universe or our place in it, and it's going away. Wave good-bye. It's a very large ship, passing in the night. Bon fucking voyage, and don't come back.
